Mark Pearson, Founder, President, Chief Investment Officer
Mark is responsible for the firm’s strategic vision, research and trading decisions. His experience in the hi-tech and financial services industry dates back to 1986. Since then, his fervid passion for portfolio management compelled him to develop a unique back-to-basics investment philosophy. He founded Anchor Capital Management in 1994, which he later renamed Nepsis, Inc.
Mark has served as president of the financial planning division of a bank holding company, authored numerous articles and financial presentations and worked raising capital for corporate acquisitions.
Holding a B.A. from the University of Minnesota in speech communications, Mark has extensive experience in public speaking and presenting. His work is featured in various publications and he speaks at numerous industry press engagements, panels, and conferences.
By tying motivation and investment together, Mark helps investors find clarity and prepare their financial futures. He is a well-known industry speaker, having spoken at engagements with Financial Advisor magazine and conferences and the Financial Planning Association. He was also received a cover feature story in TD Ameritrade Institutional’s Solutions Magazine for his excellence in technology and client service.
As a trained and seasoned presenter, Mark addresses many different audiences on different topics including Baby Boomers and retirees on how to best avoid planning and investing pitfalls, corporate management teams on ROI principles, families on financial and investment planning, and financial planners on economy-neutral asset management. He has also written extensively on the principles of portfolio management in a bear market, as well as on market trends and expectations.
Through spoken and written word, Mark maintains a highly entertaining and unique perspective in an effort to bring clarity to investing and financial planning. Outside the office, Mark is a board member of the Christian International Foundation and has served on several other boards and advisory committees. Mark is also devoted to volunteering, playing golf and spending time with his wife and three children.
Mark Breneman, CFP®, JD, Corporate Counsel
Mark focuses primarily on the areas of elder law, estate planning, probate, special needs and disability planning, in addition to guardianships and conservatorships, and bankruptcy. Prior to joining Nepsis, Mark worked as a financial planner for families. His nearly thirty years of experience in financial planning, as well as his knowledge of securities industry compliance and supervision, make him a great advocate for helping families plan for the future.
Mark received his undergraduate degree from Gustavus Adolphus College in 1970, became a Certified Financial Planner in 1990, and obtained a Masters of Science in Financial Planning from the College for Financial Planning in 1992. Mark completed his Juris Doctor from Hamline University in 2007. He also holds a Certificate in Dispute Resolution from the Dispute Resolution Institute at Hamline. Mark is licensed to practice law in the State of Minnesota and the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota, and is a member of the Minnesota State Bar Association (MSBA) and the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA).
Chuck Etzweiler, MBA, CIMA®, CFP®, CMT, Vice President of Research
With more than twenty-five years of investment industry experience, Chuck directs the on-going research efforts of the firm, much of which help both advisors and clients understand the philosophy and strategy of Nepsis, Inc. in a deeper manner. A high percentage of the focus of the research is centered around money manager pitfalls, investor short-comings and repetitive behavioral biases that detract clients from earning optimal returns.
Prior to joining Nepsis, Chuck worked as Chief Market Strategist for True North Global Research and as a Securities Analyst with both Wells Fargo and the Bank of Hawaii. Additionally, Chuck has earned the CFP designation and is a Chartered Market Technician. Chuck is a graduate of Syracuse University and also has earned his MBA in Finance.
Chuck is an active member of the CFA Society of Minnesota, the Market Technician’s Association and the Investment Management Consultants Association.
Chuck was raised in Allentown, PA and now lives in California with his wife and two sons.
Ken Harpell, VP Advisor Services
Ken has over 30 years in the insurance and financial services industry. Ken’s experience building distribution channels as well as developing streamlined process systems will provide immediate impact to Nepsis, Inc. Ken is responsible for managing the existing Nepsis Advisor Group while looking for opportunities to grow this part of the business.
Prior to joining Nepsis, Inc., Ken served as the Director of Broker Relations at MNsure for the past 2 years. While at MNsure, Ken led critical initiatives that provided brokers with resources necessary to work with the State of Minnesota Exchange. During Ken’s tenure at MNsure the broker distribution channel grew to over 1,100 brokers.
Outside of professional work, Ken enjoys spending time with his wife, Carrie and their 3 children. His hobbies include playing golf and hockey when time allows.
Connie Song, CTP®, Vice President of Investments
Connie develops solutions to advance the investment values of clients and families. Connie brings to the team experience with a blend of mutual fund and wealth management knowledge. She has over 20 years of investment experience spanning equities, fixed income, asset allocation, portfolio management, and capital markets experience.
Connie started working on Wall Street at Goldman Sachs in New York City. After Goldman, she worked at Oppenheimer Funds and American Century, analyzing fixed income investments. As a Director at Bank of Montreal U.S. Asset Management, she provided fundamental investment analysis tailored to value and growth equity portfolio strategies. At Ameriprise Wealth Management, she provided investment, asset allocation and portfolio management advice to financial advisors.
Connie holds a MBA from Columbia Business School in New York City and a BA from Wesleyan University in Connecticut. She has earned the Certified Treasury Professional designation and is a member of the Association of Financial Professionals. She lives in the San Francisco Bay area where she enjoys playing golf with her family.
David Krypel, VP Operations
Dave is responsible for the overall general management, finance and administrative activities for all of the Nepsis operating companies. He strives to carry out the clarity message by continuing to look for ways to make Nepsis easy to do business with.
Prior to joining Nepsis in 2011, Dave gained valuable experience working in various accounting, client service and general management roles across a wide variety of industries including, direct mail, food service and public accounting.
Dave is a 1985 honors graduate of St. Cloud State University with a degree in accounting. He became a Certified Public Accountant in 1990.
In his leisure time, Dave enjoys reading, volunteering, traveling, training his dog and spending time with his wife and their three adult children.
Matt Pearson, Business Development
The driving force for Matt’s love in the Financial Services business has been relevant in his life since a young age. With his father as a mentor his perception on how he treats and values Financial Planning and Portfolio Management has been years in the making. Matt has a passion for sharing the Nepsis Story with Advisors around the country and helping them share it with their clients. Nepsis’ unique approach allows Matt to share a competitive advantage with the advisors that empowers them to grow their business and better assist their clients in achieving their life visions and investment goals.
Matt graduated from the University of Wisconsin LaCrosse with a BS in Finance. Aside from financial services, Matt is a family oriented guy who enjoys spending time with family members and close friends. He kept his love of hockey and golf, and would gladly indulge you in his love for the Minnesota Wild and the stylings of Rickie Fowler or Jordan Speith.
Kevin Distad, Senior Wealth Advisor
Kevin’s passion is to bring clarity and elegant simplicity to the investor experience. With 18 years in the financial services industry, Kevin has the depth of expertise required to lead clients in identifying their highest priorities and utilizing strategies to achieve those most important objectives. As Senior Wealth Advisor at Nepsis, Inc., he works with clients in all areas of wealth management, including retirement planning, investment planning, charitable planned giving, and estate planning.
Prior to joining Nepsis, Kevin served as Wealth Advisor and Portfolio Manager at local financial planning and investment firms. As an experienced public speaker, he has made numerous presentations on investment management, financial planning, and personal stewardship.
In addition to his work at Nepsis, Kevin is very active in several non-profit and volunteer organizations, including serving as Director of Stewardship for the North Central Conference of the Evangelical Church, serving on the board of Northland Bible Camp, and chairing various fundraising committees for his children’s school.
Outside of professional work, Kevin dedicates time to his most important priority… his wife and six incredible children. They live in Brooklyn Park.
Jeff Augspurger, Senior Wealth Advisor
Jeff started his practice in the fall of 1987 and teamed up with Nepsis in March, 2011. He has seen many events happen over that course of time. Jeff immensely enjoys working with clients of all ages, as well as multi-generational planning and is looking forward to many more years. He grew up on the family farm, and enjoys working with business owners as well as individuals. He has reviewed thousands of financial plans, and has acquired knowledge through experience and relationships with other successful planners.
Jeff is passionate about financial planning and sharing how it is much more than dollars, and more about good stewardship with what you have available. He teaches clients the importance of passing that mindset on to children, building relationships, enjoying the journey of life now, as well as planning for the future.
Matt Augspurger, Wealth Advisor
Seeing a growing need for strategy and specificity in financial planning, Matthew opened up his own financial planning business from scratch in 2008. In 2011 he joined forces with Nepsis, Inc. to deepen research capabilities and refine money management, which gave him the ability to focus specifically on building financial plans and relationships with clients. Matthew comes from a family of educators and whether in conversation with one person or fifty, his passion for teaching shines through.
With a drive for helping families and local business owners, he writes a monthly newsletter and speaks regularly at financial seminars. He volunteers on the Board of Education at his children’s school, is often on the Church Council, and serves on the Executive Leadership Team of the Waterfront Professionals Chapter of BNI.
Matthew is the oldest of six children and lives in Poulsbo, Washington with his wife, Amber and their three children. When not in the office or eating with his family, give him a well written novel and point him in the direction of the nearest fishing hole.
Tom Schmid, Wealth Advisor
With 9 years of investment advisory experience, Tom is driven to help individuals achieve their personal financial goals and dreams. Whether it be assisting clients in budget management, investment advising, college planning, retirement or post-retirement planning, Tom has the experience. Recognizing that investing and financial planning can be complex, Tom is passionate about providing the utmost clarity to his clients.
Prior to joining Nepsis, Tom worked in the pharmaceutical sales industry working with medical professionals on educating patients on new medications, indications and dosages. He holds a BS degree from Minnesota State University of Mankato, MN.
Tom volunteers as a youth sports coach for various programs as well as being actively involved on school committees.
In his spare time, Tom enjoys golfing, tennis, racquetball and spending time with his wife and 3 sons.
Josh Englund, Wealth Advisor
Joshua is on a mission to bring ultimate clarity to those that choose to entrust him to be a steward of their financial resources. As a Wealth Advisor (a Fiduciary) he puts his clients' best interest above his own. More importantly, he applies his foundational belief of the “Golden Rule” to the level of financial services he provides.
Joshua enjoys working with small business owners and individuals that would like guidance on planning for retirement, investment advice, charitable giving strategies and estate planning. He believes to be a successful investor you must have a disciplined and sound investment Philosophy and Strategy, with Flexibility to respond to market volatility and a level of Transparency that allows one to see all the activity within their portfolio.
Joshua received his B.S. in Finance at the University of Northwestern – St. Paul. He is a Registered Member of the National Ethics Association. Joshua enjoys giving back to the charities, communities and churches he is involved with.
Outside of the office, Joshua enjoys spending quality time with his beautiful wife and son. He likes to play yard games, cheer on his favorite sports teams and relax by a bonfire.
Alyssa Greene, Marketing Manager
Alyssa received a B.S.B.A in Direct and Interactive Marketing with a concentration in Information Systems from Drake University. She was presented with both Leadership and Professional Speech awards as a member of the College of Business and Public Administration.
Prior to graduating and joining the Nepsis team, she held a three year internship at Foster Group, Inc. a wealth management firm based in Des Moines Iowa. She was a part of the Iowa chapter of the American Marketing Association and plans to continue her membership throughout the coming years.
In her free time Alyssa enjoys hanging out with family and friends, running and watching her favorite sports teams.
